Tastiest watermelons have big, black seeds

Each week, I enjoy “Fertile Mind,” a column about things that grow in gardens — either beautiful flowers or veggies that find their way into healthy diets, written by Jan Wiese-Fales, who describes herself as “a Master Gardener who lives and pulls weeds at Mole Hill in rural Howard County.”

On a recent Sunday, I learned all about watermelons. I learned that, in 2009, Congress designated July as National Watermelon Month, that watermelons were known as long ago as 3000 B.C. and that they probably came from Egypt. I learned that a new record melon raised in 2010 by Chris Kent of Sevierville, Tenn., weighed 291 pounds, and the species is called Carolina Cross, which is known for its size but not its flavor.

I learned that watermelons came to this country in the 18th century, and Ol’ Clark is glad they did.

Jan’s column brought a rush of memories and, sadly, recognition of the demise of the best of all watermelons — those with seeds.

Our modern technology has given us watermelons in a variety of colors — yellow, green, white, blue — and, the worst of all, seedless red melons. Our nation has become so lazy it doesn’t want to spit seeds.
